From Wednesday until Friday a Pan American Youth tournament is underway in Buenos Aires. The competition will award seven Olympic quota places per gender for Buenos Aires 2018. Argentina is presenting its two teams to determine who will participate in October.
Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Aruba, Canada, Venezuela, Chile, Mexico, the United States, the Cayman Islands, Panama, and Guatemala are the countries competing in the qualifier.
Training began on Sunday at the Club Ciudad de Buenos Aires, but the artistic gymnastics competition kicked off on Wednesday as part of the Pan American Youth qualifier to determine who will get the top prizes: seven Olympic slots for Buenos Aires 2018.
Brazil’s Flavia Saraiva was the big artistic gymnastics protagonist at Nanjing 2014: she was a gold medal winner on floor, a silver medal winner for all-around in addition to the beam. Two years after her experience at the Youth Olympic Games she went on to compete at Rio 2016.
Buenos Aires 2018 is now looking for artistic gymnastics representatives from the Americas with Saraiva as a source of inspiration for the new generation of young athletes. The Pan American Gymnastics Union, the Argentine Gymnastics Confederation, and the Metropolitan Gymnastics Federation organised the qualifier that has the best athletes from the continent vying for the Olympic tickets.
Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Aruba, Canada, Venezuela, Chile, Mexico, the United States, the Cayman Islands, Panama, and Guatemala are the countries participating in the championship in the Argentine capital.
Eight Argentine athletes were selected to compete at the tournament: Olivia Araujo, Brisa Carraro, Luna Fernandez and Abigail Magistrati, and Lucia Esposito as a substitute among the women, and Enzo Barrionuevo, Franco Celayes, Fernando Espindola, Santiago Gomez and Lucas Alifieri as a substitute in the men’s division. Argentina has two spots (one per gender) guaranteed as the organising country for the third summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games.
Artistic gymnastics will have 36 representatives per gender at Buenos Aires 2018. China, South Korea, Japan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Egypt, Algeria and Australia have their spots secured for the women’s division following the three continental qualifiers.
China, Japan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Chinese Taipei, Iran, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Egypt, South Africa, Namibia, and New Zealand have their Olympic tickets among the men. The list will be complete following the European qualifier that is to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on June 23.
